Everybody Has More Than Me: When Social Media Makes Your Life Feel Smaller

Everybody online seems to have more. So she starts making her own life look different too. But when a close friend notices, the story she has created becomes harder to defend.

My Story | Short Story Sunday

Real Stories. Real Choices. No Perfect Endings.

It is easy to say social media does not show the whole story. It can be much harder to remember that when everyone else’s life seems more exciting, more expensive or more put together than yours.

This week’s My Story follows a 16-year-old girl who starts changing how she presents her own life online—and eventually has to decide whether leaving something technically unsaid makes it true.

Think About It

  1. Was the narrator lying if she never directly said the car or lifestyle was hers?
  2. Why do you think she felt embarrassed by a life she also knew was not bad?
  3. Did Nia handle the situation well? What might you have said differently?
  4. Why did the narrator care that the ordinary photo got fewer likes, even after realizing what she had been doing?
  5. Where is the line between choosing what to share online and creating a version of yourself that is not really true?

My Story Journal Reflection

1. What part of this story stayed with you the most, and why do you think it affected you?

2. If you were living this story, what would you be thinking, feeling, or considering that you might not say out loud?

3. What would you do next, and what could happen because of that choice?

About My Story

My Story is a Three J Youth storytelling series built around situations young people may recognize from their own lives. Friendships. Family. School. Pressure. Mistakes. Relationships. Expectations. Social media. Growing up.

The stories are designed to encourage young people to think, reflect, and talk without always telling them who was right or what should happen next.

Real Stories. Real Choices. No Perfect Endings.
