Northern Nevada teams dominated at the high school football state championship games today at Allegiant Stadium.
McQueen of Reno upset previously unbeaten Sloan Canyon 27-20 to claim the Class 4A title. Sloan Canyon had been barely challenged all season, including a lopsided victory against Class 5A Foothill, making McQueen’s victory a significant surprise.
McQueen jumped out to an early lead, scoring the game’s first two touchdowns. Sloan Canyon battled back to take a 21-13 advantage on a Cade Hoshino touchdown pass to Justice Hutchins, but McQueen responded with 14 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to capture its first state title since 2008.
Hoshino finished with three touchdown passes, also connecting with Jerome Johnson and Brandon Quaglio.
The turning point came late in the third quarter with Sloan Canyon holding a 20-13 lead and driving inside the McQueen 20-yard line. But an interception at the 5-yard line gave McQueen the ball back and shifted momentum, even though the Lancers couldn’t immediately capitalize.
McQueen scored the equalizer with seven minutes remaining, then delivered the winning touchdown with just one minute left on the clock.
Spanish Springs of Sparks capped an undefeated season with a dominant 42-23 victory over Faith Lutheran in the Class 5A championship game.
Spanish Springs built a commanding 42-10 lead in the fourth quarter before Faith Lutheran added two late touchdowns, including a 4-yard run from Dominick Folino.
Despite entering on a four-game winning streak, Faith Lutheran struggled to find offensive rhythm, falling short in the title game for the third consecutive season.
North Nevada also prevailed in the Class 3A Saturday at UNR, with Churchill County of Fallon hanging on for a 21-14 victory against Moapa Valley.
